Lutgardis Claes graduated from the Royal Military Academy in 1984 as Master of Science in Engineering.

She started in the field of military aviation and has acquired operational, strategic, industry and diplomatic experience. Her operational experience includes different technical positions and the command of a Maintenance squadron on an F-16 airbase. Her strategic experience results from successive postings as integrated weapon system manager, quality assurance representative (ISO9001), public procurement officer and chief of staff at Material Resources.

From 2013 till 2017, she was the military Advisor of the Belgian Ambassador to the UN in New York. Being promoted Major General Air Force, she then took command of the Royal Military Academy. Retired from the military, she is now director general of SHAPE International School.
